Epokhe Films presents Ceremony

A short film by Kai Neville featuring Craig Anderson - Australia's most influential free surfer.

Director: Kai Neville

Music: Brendan Woithe featuring Richard Tognetti & Cam Deyell (Liars)

Sound Design: Declan Diacono

Music Supervision & Sound Post Producer: Analese Cahill

Brendan's breadth of experience creating compositions and sonic structures led to his collaboration with Kai, providing the film’s unnervingly tranquil score.

We explored a few reference points and had some conversations about the aesthetic we were going for, particularly how it could support the story and emotional tone. Kai really gave us the trust & freedom to let our ideas flow. Even though the film leans heavily into an ambient vibe, we focused on syncing key story beats and everyone brought strong ideas to the table about adapting the music as the picture edit evolved.

Under Brendan's guidance, we enlisted fellow orchestral & recording luminaries Richard Tognettii (Australian Chamber Orchestra) & Cameron Deyell (SIA, Katie Noonan, Sonic Youth) who provided instrumentation, performing violin and guitar respectively. Collaboratively constructing the erie and stirring arrangement that accompanies the film.

For Brendan, that moment when live musicians are brought in to record a film score is always one of the most thrilling parts of the process. It’s when the music truly comes alive, infused with the energy and nuance of real performance. For this project, Richard and Cam captured exactly the sense of danger and unpredictability we were aiming for - the qualities that echo the nature of the ocean itself. We intentionally structured the music to leave space for spontaneity, even marking sections where they could step beyond the written notes and respond more freely.
